Augmented reality used in Doritos marketing campaign
Frito-Lay is using augmented reality (AR) in a marketing campaign for their Doritos brand. Special packages of the chips are marked with an AR symbol which allows customers to view videos from the Doritos Late Night website. Customers can use their webcams to scan the AR symbol and watch the video appear on the screen.
The augmented reality capability is built on Adobe action script (AS3) using the FLARToolKit, which is an adaptation of the ARToolKit. FLARToolkit detects the AR symbol in the webcam video and calculates the camera position in three-dimensional space. The GE Smart Grid demo is another example of the use of the toolkit. A tutorial on how to use FLARToolKit is available online.
