Candidate Search for Director of HP Labs – China
HP Labs is the exploratory and advanced research group for Hewlett-Packard, tackling complex challenges facing our customers and society over the next decade, while pushing the frontiers of fundamental science. We are now seeking an exceptional candidate to assume the role of Director for our HP Labs China research operation in Beijing, China. HP Labs operates under the direction of Prith Banerjee, Senior Vice President of Research for HP. HP Labs is organized into 23 labs located in seven major sites: in Palo Alto, USA; Bangalore, India; Beijing, China; Bristol, UK; Haifa, Israel; St. Petersburg, Russia; and Tokyo, Japan. Established in 2005, HP Labs China builds on HP’s long-established presence in China, and focuses on creating IT innovations that effectively harness the rich digital information to tackle the most challenging problems facing private and public sectors, especially those in rapidly growing economies such as China. HP Labs China follows a tradition of deep technical research that has direct impact on HP’s business through innovations in product and service offerings that provide benefits valued by customers. Current research focuses on large scale information management and data mining, including projects in areas such as web information extraction and content mining, and media understanding and processing. The successful candidate will have demonstrated a record of leading world class research, including both significant management experience in a major high tech company or academic institution, and a significant personal publication record. The job requirements include:
1. The ability to articulate and execute on a vision in a leadership capacity
2. Deep technical knowledge, evidenced by publication records and patents
3. Strong business acumen and the ability to identify opportunities to transfer technology into an HP business unit
4. Strong understanding of market dynamics and technology trends in emerging market countries
5. Excellent people, management, and communication skills
6. The ability to create strong research proposals on behalf of the research in HP Labs China
7. The ability to deliver research projects within budget and on time. The ability to leverage internal and external relationships to drive collaboration and further the research agenda for HP Labs China
8. A Ph.D. degree preferred. At minimum, a Master of Science degree.
