The Nokia Research Center Hollywood seeks a research team member to join their new research laboratory in Santa Monica. This exciting new lab will carry out a range of research activities in the areas of mobile Augmented Reality experiences, innovative use of sensors, new forms of user interface and interaction, and large-scale mobile Internet services, systems and solutions. This lab will leverage the culture, talents and dynamic nature of Los Angeles academic institutions and media industries, to help transform Nokia into a leading company in not only mobile phone devices but also in mobile content, entertainment and Internet services.

We are currently seeking a candidate with a Ph.D. in computer vision, particularly with experience in markerless tracking for pose recovery in unprepared outdoor environments. Experience in object recognition and object tracking in outdoor environments is also desired. The challenge is to develop new, real-time computer vision tracking approaches to support pose recovery and object recognition on mobile platforms in unprepared outdoor urban environments. The ideal candidate should be prolific in creating new concepts and converting them to working prototypes and should have the desire and breadth of interests to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team (with artists and designers). The successful candidate must be able to implement practical, robust solutions that run in real-time in real-world applications.

This person will be recognized as an expert in computer vision and will have excellent communication and collaboration skills. The position requires both deep and broad understanding at the software engineering level of vision algorithms. The successful candidate will actively participate in a team that will deliver innovative concepts, demonstrations and working prototypes. This person will be expected to create intellectual property, publish papers, and be actively involved in the research community. The research perspective includes both shorter and longer term aspirations.

Requirements

* Ph.D. in computer vision, or equivalent experience.
* Enthusiasm for mobile and personal computing systems and devices is expected.
* Proven track record of quickly building research prototype systems
* C++ and Linux development experience

Desired experience

* Development experience on mobile devices / cell phone platforms is a plus
* Previous experience working in interdisciplinary teams with artistic and entertainment personnel is a plus
* Research experience in computer graphics is a plus
