Job Summary:

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI)'s Janelia Farm Research Campus is a unique, world-class research community in the Washington, D.C. area currently has an opening for a Software Engineer. This position will work with computer scientists and other members of the Chklovskii Lab to design and implement computer vision algorithms for electron microscopy reconstruction.

The candidate will have a solid understanding of MATLAB, C/C++ and Python. Experience with image processing and machine learning is a big plus. Familiarity with graphics/user interface toolkits like VTK and OpenGL will be useful.

Principal Responsibilities:

* Responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining software architectures and frameworks and will work closely with biologists and computer scientists to develop tools and user interfaces.
* Will initiate discussions with researchers to understand the thrust of their domain science and their software and programming needs.
* The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of image processing and machine learning. Prior experience with biomedical image analysis a big plus, with a strong preference for a track record of publications in peer-reviewed computer vision conferences and journals.
* On the software side, the job requires developing sophisticated and reliable programs in MATLAB and C/C++, and skills with these languages are essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

* The ideal candidate should have a BS/MS in the Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
* Experience working closely with scientists in a pure research environment preferred.
* Proven skills in implementing scientific computing software, and proven knowledge of MATLAB, C/C++ and Python desirable.
* Proven skills in software engineering, particularly implementing sizeable scientific computing software in a group development environment.
* Familiarity with Python, and graphics/user interface toolkits like VTK and OpenGL is useful.
